How to care for your Jewellery
This guide will help you to maintain your Rhan pieces for as long as possible. There are many factors that can influence the condition of your jewellery over time but remembering that jewellery is delicate and needs to be looked after carefully will ensure you can enjoy wearing it for years to come.
Sterling Silver
Sterling Silver is an alloy made up of 92.5% pure Silver and 7.5% Copper. This alloy is used for jewellery making as it is far more durable than pure silver alone.
The nature of Sterling Silver is that it will over time oxidise through exposure of air and is therefore prone to tarnishing. This is not a fault and can be easily remedied. We recommend gently rubbing your jewellery with a specialised jewellery cleaning cloth to restore its shine and keep it looking at its best.
Exposure to other factors can further damage your silver jewellery. see our tips below to minimise risk of damage.
Top tips for caring for your Sterling Silver:
1: As it’s a soft metal, silver can be susceptible to being scratched, and dented. Be mindful whilst wearing and always remove when involved in physical activity.
2: Always apply jewellery last when getting ready after any makeup, perfume, hairspray, and lotions. Direct contact with these can damage the appearance of the silver.
3: similarly a build up of products when bathing can also leave a 'soapy' film on your jewellery reducing its appearance.
4: Remove your jewellery before getting into a swimming pool or spa. Exposure to chlorine will cause the silver to tarnish. This tarnishing process is exacerbated in higher temperature water.
5: Household cleaners with acids or abrasives, will damage your jewellery’s finish and will likely cause the silver to tarnish. We recommend using rubber gloves or removing your jewellery whilst cleaning.
6: When not being worn it is always best to store your jewellery away safely avoiding contact with other pieces to reduce the risk of scratched or tangling.
7: For the same reason remove jewellery before sleeping.
Solid Gold
We recommend choosing gold for any jewellery you wish to wear daily or any favourite piece you want to hold onto forever as solid gold is more durable than silver.
The Gold for jewellery is always made using an alloy - mixing it with other metals including silver, copper, and zinc. The addition of these metals makes gold far more durable: however, unlike pure gold they can make the product susceptible to tarnishing over time. This is not a fault of the product, and can be prevented or removed by simply wiping with an anti-tarnish jewellery cleaning cloth.
Top tips for caring for your Gold:
1: As it’s still soft metal, gold can be susceptible to being scratched, and dented.
4: Household cleaners with acids or abrasives, will damage your jewellery’s finish and will likely cause the silver to tarnish. We recommend using rubber gloves or removing your jewellery whilst cleaning.
5: When not being worn it is always best to store your jewellery away safely avoiding contact with other pieces to reduce the risk of it being scratched or tangled.
6: For the same reason remove jewellery before sleeping.
Simple cleaning advice for Solid Gold:
To ensure your gold jewellery continues to look its best we recommend regular cleaning, which can easily be done at home.
Add a few drops of mild washing up liquid to a bowl of warm water and soak your jewellery for about 15 to 30 minutes.
Do not use hot or boiling water. Equally, don't use very cold water because any dirt will become harder to remove.
After soaking, gently scrub with a soft-bristle toothbrush (the softer the better!) to remove any hidden grime lodged in nooks and crannies.
Next, rinse each piece in warm running water to remove any remaining dirt.
Finally, lightly blot dry with a soft cloth and let the jewellery sit out on a towel to air dry completely before wearing.
